Kastellorizo to Rhodes

After spending several nights docked at the quay, we decided to move to a nearby anchorage to spend the night in the quiet bay east of the main thoroughfare. It was probably for the best: this little town Kastellorizo was very cute but, unfurtunately, we started to disassemble it by bumping into the concrete quay border and almost knocking down he customer who was sitting a little too close to the boat (honestly, his fault. As a local, he ought to have known better since the humongous ferry that comes in daily! creates quite a wake!). The next day we briefly stopped and checked out the local attraction, Blue Cave, an underwater cave about 5 miles down the coast. We are happy to report that it’s as blue as expected, The opening into the cave is only about 2 feet above water and the cave is absolutely enormous once you get inside. The sunlight shining into the cave reflects off the blue water in such a way that it illuminates the whole cave with effervescent blue light. Or maybe we were just hallucinating from the fumes of all that non-stop traffic of all the boats driving directly into the cave without turning off their engines?

We left early in the morning, after having our cup of coffee and headed to Rhodes which was about 77 miles away. About 10 hours later, we finally arrived on Rhodes and dropped anchor into Anthony Quinn’s bay, named after eponymous Hollywood actor who came to Rhodes to film “Zorba” and liked the island so much that he actually bought property here. Took the dinghy ashore and had a a lovely meal to celebrate our first successful Mediterranean crossing.
